She Rises from the Ashes

It’s all too easy to forget who you are
When you’re right in the middle
Of a storm of circumstances and instances,
Of a whirlwind of drama and gossip

They shake you (oh, and how you quiver, my dear)
They break you (oh, and how you cry so, my dear)
Until you remember yourself less and less

But you stand up yet again
Shoulders pulled back
That so-called stiff upper lip
Has never looked
So beautiful
And dangerous,
Like that glint in your eyes
That wasn’t there before

You keep a few very close to you
The rest of them you view from
The shore, where you’re
Anchored and safe

But is “safe” what you wanted all along?
