We Know Better

Hearts keep on breaking,
One after another
An “I love you” from
His mouth may denote
Something else
It’s a game for some
It’s the truth for some
You can take it any way you want

Saturday night we run
Past the doors and straight
To the bars and wide spaces
Where we keep our names
But forget the weight on
Our shoulders

Sunday morning we say
Good bye but we know
There will be a next time
And perhaps we’ll get lost
In another time, another place,
And yet we’ll still be completely in tune

Hearts keep on breaking but
I have the sneaking suspicion
Yours and mine won’t
We walk the same line, you and I
We are both in love with life
And we carry that kind of love
Wherever life takes us

We’ll be a mess in others’ eyes
But we know better, you and I.
