Like Today

You’ll never catch me today,
Swimming and thrashing around
Thoughts of things,
Things like life and love and death

The exterior is a funny thing
Social media is even more so
Those selfies, those perfectly filtered
Snapshots of stellar, breathtaking moments

Moments that could have been plain —
Sipping a latte on the office building’s steps,
That pedestrian lane on the next block,
And even the shirt you woke up with

You’ll never guess these thoughts and things
Swimming and wafting and coursing
Through my head,
Things like why and how and what

Only the intricacies of these are
Left unspoken, teetering at the tip
Of my tongue, where no one else
Except for myself is privy to them.
