Down the Rabbit Hole

A lonesome snowflake lands
On your ruddy cheeks,
Settling there for a kiss
Before it melts away

You barely noticed
You were preoccupied with
Making sure each step won’t
Fall into a crack, a gap

The change in you was
Languorous and whisper soft
If today was a few weeks ago
You would have cared

Slowly, you collapsed into
A world where only you
Can access and understand
And we lose you from time to time

You begin to glimpse the monsters
In people, the goblins in dark
Places and spaces, and fear
The things we don’t see

Once the nine to five is done,
You retreat to the safety
Of your own room
And lose yourself within yourself.
