These Modern Times, This Modern Day

One by one, the words lost
Their meaning, every one of them

She sits by the cafe,
Hand on her coffee cup,
Eyes on the fashion magazine.
Snow falls outside but she
Hardly cares

One by one, the words lost
Their impact, not one was saved

She sits at home,
Curled up on the sofa,
Mesmerized by the TV shows.
The leaves turn a fresh green in her garden
But she hardly remembers she had one

One by one, the words lost
Their value, all of them

She walks down the street,
Hands and eyes on her phone
The brilliant blue sky made her
Hair shimmer beautifully but she
Barely noticed it

One by one, the words lost
The words were completely
Obliterated, all weight and meaning

She hardly notices,
She hardly cares.
